When planning my eating adventures in Vietnam, I ALWAYS relied on the blogger community. Here are just some of the blogs I used while traveling through Vietnam:
- He Needs Food, a post on Hoi An
- Migrationology, a post on Ho Chi Minh
- Vietnamese God, suggestions from the author himself on where to eat in Hanoi
- Funnelogy, a post on “Banh”
- Legal Nomads, a post on Ho Chi Minh
With all this advice this is how I have eaten in Vietnam…
Bun Bo Nam Bo
The Buffalo Run FEASTS:
90% of the time time I had no idea what I was eating, but it was all AMAZING!

Man! am I] going to miss the food in Hoi An! But it was time to continue my journey and head to Ho Chi Minh! I flew (didn’t want to take a 12+ hour train ride) and the ride was pretty uneventful, until I went to pick up my checked bag. I grabbed my backpack and INSTANTLY SMELLED FISH.
I then saw the culprit. Someone’s styrofoam container of, I’m assuming, RAW FISH, started to leak and spilt ALL OVER MY BOOK BAG.
I smelled like fish bait. Kill me.
After trying to disinfect my book bag (it didn’t really work), I was HUNGRY! Still needing to check off some traditional Vietnamese dishes off my food “To Do” list, I headed to 195 Co Giang for Bun Thit Nuong. The dish literally means, “noodles with grilled meat”, and that is totally what you get! Oh, and a ton of veggies too!
Bun Thit Nuong
The dish reminded me a lot of Bun Bo Nam Bo, but more meat and less crunchy elements.
Tomorrow I squeeze in a quick tour of Ho Chi Minh before heading to Phnom Penh, Cambodia!
