When my head hit my pillow for my first night in Salzburg, I fell asleep thinking,
“I’m going to sleep in…”
Well, my internal clock didn’t agree with that statement, therefore, at 8am I was wide awake. Still planning on lounging in bed for most of the morning I started with the morning routine…Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, etc.. Glancing out the window I noticed it was a wee bit cloudy, so I checked the weather online…
Not just rain, thunderstorms.
Well that just sealed my fate. I climbed out of bed (yes, I was on the top bunk), threw some clothes on (really regretting not packing that rain coat…), and ran out the door!
Walking towards Hohensalzburg Fortress
Again, the benefits of waking up early, EMPTY STREETS.
By the time I got to the foot of the Fortress I was pretty hungry! I was thinking of stopping at Cafe Tomaselli, but I was worried about the rain so I grabbed a bacon and cheese pretzel and headed up the mountain.
The Festungsbang, or funicular, is a railway that brings you up to the fortress. It has been open since 1892, with updating of course 😉 I had purchased a “Salzburg Card” for the day (~$28 USD) so my ride up, and entrance to the fortress was free.
Interesting note! If you have the “Salzburg Card” and get there before 11am you get to see the State Rooms for free, otherwise it is an additional cost.
Aside from some clouds there was still no sign of the expected “thunderstorms” so I decided to put my “Salzburg Card” to good use and explore the city center and some of it’s museums. It is amazing how crowded it got in only two hours!
So you may have noticed there weren’t that many pictures of the inside of museums. Well the first museum I went to, The Residenz Palace of DomQuartier, was really beautiful, SO MANY CHANDELIERS, but I couldn’t take any photos 🙁
Well I did sneak this one…
Then I walked towards Mozart’s birthplace, and there was a REALLY long line. So I gave up on the whole “museum” thing 😉 At least I tried!!
Eventually it was time for FOOD, and guess what I got??
A bosna 🙂
Some more walking/wandering…
Well so much for that rain…
I decided to chill and work on my blog for a bit at Cafe Bazar, a delightful cafe on the river.
I really just wanted iced coffee. Just coffee, milk, and ice. Well yeah, they didn’t have that. So instead I got ice cream with coffee 😉 The rain finally did come, so I waited it out at the cafe in order to avoid getting soaked when walking back to the hostel.
For dinner, me and a girl from Quebec headed to Die Wiesse! I ordered wine, she got beer (her glass was cooler than mine 😉 ), and I got the Weiner Schnitzel! NOMZ
Salzburg is a beautiful, charming city, and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Austria!
Love always, Arianna the Wandering Pipette
