For my last full day on Koh Chang I really wanted to rent a motorbike. Yes, Yes, I may have had a traumatic incident the last time I road a motorbike, but I really did love it! I also really wanted to explore the large island 🙂
Unfortunately, when I woke up it looked like it was going to rain. Driving a motorbike in the rain is never a good idea, but on Koh Chang it is even worse, as the roads turn to “ice” with the slightest rain. Yesterday (Sunday), when we were returning from the boat pier, I saw a motorbike rider fall off his bike as he was going downhill. He wasn’t critically injured, but there was NO WAY I was going to risk getting in an accident by driving in the rain.
Therefore, I decided to lounge 🙂
I also did some laundry, and blogged, but it was mostly a “relax and read” kind of a day 🙂
Started on one side of the pool….
Ended up in another spot 😉 With a pretty view of the clouds!
I tried a new kind of cider! It was pretty good! Especially since it only cost me about a buck 🙂
Obviously, I would have loved a BEAUTIFUL SUNNY day for my last day on the island, but overall I had a great day 🙂
Sometimes you need a vacation from your vacation 😉
The following day, Tuesday, was my last day! Well hours…
At 8:30 am I was in a van driving towards the ferry that would take me back to the mainland, and Bangkok.
The van, was excellent. Perks of traveling in low season, it was just me and another fellow in an 10 person van. SO MUCH ROOM FOR ACTIVITIES 🙂 Actually, more like SO MUCH ROOM FOR SLEEPING 🙂 Only downside, my fellow traveller had a certain stench about him 🙁
Around 10:30 we stop for gas and a bathroom break.
Um hello bathroom…
It was not my first time using a bathroom like this, but it never gets easier.
Had to get some iced coffee to go 🙂
I was really thinking we would stop for lunch or another bathroom break, but instead we drove straight to Bangkok, another 4 hours. With all the water and coffee I drank I DESPERATELY needed a bathroom. Unfortunately, once I got off the van I still needed to find my hostel, which was a 10 minute walk. Once I FINALLY made it to my hotel , my first question was,
“WHERE IS YOUR BATHROOM”
With a sprint to the bathroom my crisis was adverted. Thank goodness. After checking in I realized how incredibly hungry I was. Normally, I try to stick to local cuisine, but a blogger highly recommended an Indian restaurant near Chinatown (where I was staying) so I thought “why not!” 🙂
I got a little turned around but eventually I found Tony’s 🙂
I ordered roti and chicken masala.
At Tony’s I met Jimmy. What a character 🙂 Long story short I met a fellow scientist, who 8 years ago found himself burnt out at the end of his doctoral training. Wanting to learn about Buddhism, he came to Thailand and never left.
We talked for almost 3 hours…
I will never forget my afternoon with Jimmy 🙂
As I walked back to my hostel I realized that being back in Bangkok is the first time in over a month that I wasn’t in a brand new city. As I walked down a street I explored only 45 days ago, the sense of familiarity was comforting. I may not have loved Bangkok at first, but I sure do now.
Can’t wait to do some more sightseeing! And eating of course 😉
Love always, Arianna the Wandering Pipette
